Unhappy [G2SEO] | Part-2: The Search Engines Showdown

In the first part I posted some numbers, do you remember them? They were the percentage that each SE held of the search market in 2007.
    Here, let's refresh your memory:
    Google: 50%
    Yahoo: 30%
    Live: 10%

Today, we are are going to analyze each of the main Search Engine's way to rank a website (as well as some other things). Let's get ready for an epic
    SEARCH ENGINE

    Google vs. Yahoo vs. MSN

    1.
uses relevance, trust and authority to rank websites.
About its way to rank websites:
    • Promotes natural link growth over time
    • Site age accounts a lot
    • Allows great importance to keyword variations and for
    • Anchor text links
    • Uses quality filters
    • Penalizes duplicate content
    • Penalizes reciprocal linking
    • Best site crawling algorithm around.
It takes time to reach top rankings in Google. Also, Google frequently updates it's ranking algorithm and it forces SE Optimists to always adopt new pratices.

    2.
is less biased-toward revelance and links than Google, but it still analyzes a site's trust and authority to rank it.
About its way to rank websites:
    • Gives a lot of weight to a site's metadata
    • Sometime, it's index is manually edited to avoid spam entries
    • A paid suscription to Yahoo's directory (299$ anually) is an highway to a #1 spot in SERPs.
    • Not good as Google to determine links quality
More old-school than its competitors, old fashionned SEO techniques such as meta tags enhancement and reciprocal link building still work pretty well.

    3.
Fairly new to the search engine world. Ain't Microsoft's strongpoint at all.
About its way to rank websites:
    • Gives much more importance to On-page optimisation than Yahoo and Google
    • Quick to rank (new) websites
    • The more backlinks, the better. Quality does not mather.
    • Poor at links and revelance analysis
Live Search takes it's popularity from Micrsoft predominance in the OS world and as a default SE in Internet Explorer

    The Forgotten One

Ask Jeeves holds a mere 5% of the search engine market share. But 5% of bilions of searches everyday is still alot...
About its way to rank websites:
    • Biased toward link revelance and
    • Topical authority
    • As Google, it advantages off-page optimization more than on-page
    • Slow to rank websites
Usually, Ask is a good indicator of a well optimised your site is. If you get ranked in Ask for a keyword, you can pretty much do so anywhere else.

That's all for now! Part-3 is on the way!
In case you missed the latest part, here it is.
For all the links. have a look at the INDEX.

Nice article nic, and as i think, google have mostly feature and it's more good quality. But just wonder, in other thread there is farrhad said that google penalize duplicate content is just a myth. So which is righjt? It's make me doubt of using other people article.

Why google is good? Another reason which mostly people don't know is, even other search engine include yahoo is using google database.

Awesome article, Nic. Don't suppose you want to do a guest post on my blog sometime?!

Regarding Ask, I was actually really surprised today when I logged onto my site's stats that I was receiving a bit of traffic from Ask. OK, it wasn't much, but if I'm honest I don't get that much SE traffic because I'm in a really competitive niche.

Infact, you may be shocked to hear this, but the SE that brings me the most traffic is Windows Live :O

Google is able to make the difference between a quote and an entire copy of another website's content. You may copy SOME times in SOME articles on your blog, but you have to link to your sources.

As I said, Live is quicker to rank websites. Therefore you might be higher for a specific keyword in Live than in Google and Yahoo.

Hehe. Last time, Windows Live is the SE that brings me the most traffic. But now, Google took over.

I think the reason Windows Live brought a lot of traffic to Gloson Blog is because there were quite a number of backlinks to my blog and it is quick to rank new sites. Plus, it doesn't really focus on quality.

And, Google took over because Gloson Blog is getting better and better, which means he relationship between Google and Gloson Blog are closer. A cause of that is site age.

    !
Interesting point of view (about the 'relationship' between your blog and Google)

But yea, that will probably happen to Simon too.
