Is to find forums that are similar to yours and do exchanges with them and advertise your forum in your signature on theres. It is one of the oldest promotion methods but always works.

Yeah I agree with this, I recently signed up to a Webmaster Forum and I'm hoping to add my sig there soon.
Adding a link or banner in a thread is a very old way of promoting and you see it everywhere, so nowadays you need to have a banner that really pops out of the screen, right into the user's eyes.
A noob question...
wouldn't advertising your forum on other forums just bring members looking to promote their forum - not real members if you get my drift?

Not necessarily. When I'm a member of a forum I'm always interested in seeing the sites owned by my fellow members and because I have something in common with them, I'm always willing to visit and support their site.
A lot of forums these days though don't allow signatures because of the fact that people use them to promote, it's hard for me to find music/hip hop forums with signatures allowed.
Heck I'm doing it right now.
On every forum I'm at the first thing I do is set my signature like it is here.
It works.
same old style of promotion since time, using social networking sites.
but it should help if you sponsor templates and wordpress themes.
imagine if a template with your link in the footer. and this template is used by millions.![]()
There are different ways available for promoting websites like article submission, forum posting, creating blog, directory submission, social marketing etc. But article marketing is the best way for promoting your website.

'nuff said. Exchanges are good to keep a forum looking like something's going, but don't expect to get true members that way.
