Google has filter in place for new websites. During this "sandbox" period they do not use your backlinks which calculate your search engine rankings (backlinks still show, PR shows). Since backlinks are very important in the google algorithim, it makes it extremely hard for a new website to get any google search engine traffic for a competitive keyword when they do not factor in your backlinks. This filter lasts at least 3 months, and some claim up to a year (depends on the keyword). Once google releases your site from the "sandbox", your rankings can see a huge jump overnight. There is nothing you can do to prevent or get out of the sandbox - as it based on the age of your website.
Google grandfathered older domain names from the sandbox as long as ownership doesn't change. If you buy an older domain name from someone else, it will be treated as a new name (subject to the sandbox). This was done to prevent someone from just buying an old domain name to escape the sandbox.
This is for domain names only- established/developed websites are exempt from going back to the sandbox i.e. if you buy an established 2 year old site, it isn't going to be sandboxed when the domain changes ownership.

Well Google sand box is actually a Google function. It helps Google to maintain the equilibrium of Google search engine. It's the place where Google moderators keep eye on certain site. Specially the sites whose backlinks are building randomly. Because google does not support backlink building.

It is not all about backlinks. Every new site goes through the sandbox(as far as my research is concerned) at least once in its first 6 month period. Then it comes to the stage about which you are talking about. Start building good backlinks and Google will put you out of the sandbox.. Sandbox is just a box in which Google places you because it thinks your site isn't good enough for the search engine visitors. No need to worry just keep doing your normal work and don't panic. One day you will be out of it and your search engine traffic will be back to normal.

Well webmasters do you have idea about Google sand box?Wen i came to this webmaster line i heard about sand box more often but never understood and always confused.But what i researched and came to know that sand box is not a term created by Google but it is a term created by SEO experts.Sand box is like a restriction for new sites which fails in search engine placing inspite of good contents and in bound links and its rank is kept low intentionally to stop spamming..It is like a probation period for new sites.Just check with link:your site url and not getting any result means your site is under sand box effect.If i'm wrong pl correct me.

google sandbox is the common parlance to talk about being penalised by google bots when they do the rankings of sites. since in google eyes , backlinks are only good if they are from similar sites and also some like the .gov or .nic sites are of good repute ,so google will rank these links higher, if anything illegal is being done from these sites ,it will be blackmarked by google.
if one enters the google sandbox , it will take minimum of 6 months to 1year to climb back on the rankings so it is a big setback. avoid directory submission to all and sundry directories and getting quality backlinks should help avoid this sandbox

This thread helped me a lot in understanding the "sandbox".
But one thing still remains to be answered...
IF we create a sub domain, then is it too liable to this sandbox period? Do blogs too have sandbox period?

The Google sandbox is generally related to new websites less then a year old. It's only part of many factors that makes-up Google's algorithm in determining a website's search engine ranking.

Buying PPC doesn't help your site necessarily in the organic natural Google listings. But based on what you are paying for specific keywords, can of course place your website on the very top Google pages under a sponsored listing.
