This update is odd. A bunch of my EMD's got pushed down a bit... and "a bit" when you are #1 hurts quite a bit. But... overall... I think I came out a winner in this update. I fell for a lot of head terms, but I seem to be making up for it in the tail. This can't be good for search relevancy.
This one really scrambled the results for a wide range of search phrases for SEO companies. I can clearly see that a lot of my local competitors dropped way behind.
Most of the rankings for my main sites have improved considerably. The sites that I have not done much with lately look like they dropped down a bit. It looks like freshness might matter with this update.
It looks like the freshness of the site does matter. I checked the most important rankings for most of my sites and I lost the top 10 rankings for every site where I have not posted any new articles for the past 6 months. Those formerly top 10 rankings dropped below position 50.
Penguin appears to really not like directory links and also links without sufficient anchor text variation.
I read that earlier today that this new bird penguin is going to devalue all directory links.
My view is:
Too many spam directories out there.
I think they did that a couple of years ago for the links in the overwhelming number of directories that fall into the crappy category. I have not seen any value in those links for at least three or four years. They have been giving all of the inner pages in the crappy directories a PageRank of n/a for at least the past couple of years so that they have no value to pass. All they they have left to do is to strip PageRank form the home pages and de-index the sites. I can see that as a possibility.
They probably will not touch the local business directories. They seem to have developed a level of trust with Google. Google still features local business directory links in Places accounts.
This past year has been the most sustained rampage that I have ever seen Google engage in--but the SERPs are still pretty crappy.

This is the SEO "Crack Down" that Matt Cutts was warning about a few weeks ago. Originally the update was called the "Web Spam" update but they decided it wasn't a good idea to call everyone spammers. So, the update was renamed Penguin.

But still, funny.
That is funny. I sometimes have the same reaction to Google and their ranking rampages.
I am also surprised that those videos do not get yanked from YouTube. It is not just the Google connection, but that is a scene from a real movie, which makes it copyrighted material.
