"Google Will Change Web Marketing in 2012"

Google Will Change Web Marketing in 2012 - Brian Whalley - Harvard Business Review

More content will be published into Googles search results. No need to visit the site anymore.

The data that Google makes available will be reduced.
Since October, between 10-15% of visits to websites from Google have no longer sent information to webmasters and marketers. It is safe to assume that Google will continue to expand these changes, further limiting the data available to marketers unless they're willing to pay.

That article makes it sound like Google is out to destroy the way that Internet works, while putting more money into their own pockets. I would not put it past Google to do something like this, but it does sound a bit unrealistic.

Google already has way too much money and they are looking for ways to spend it, but many of their recent experiments have failed.

I for one do not hope that they integrate search results with social networking, because most business web site owners really do not care about social networks. Driving people to use social networks in order to improve rankings is just another artificial way to manipulate search results. Just because the young eggheads at Google like social networking is no reason to try to force others to use it.

Looks like their rolling out a change that answers simple questions. So there is no need to click through to another website if you ask "what is ram" or "what is a shoe" you get a dictionary definition in the top of the serp.
I guess something like that is a bit of bad news for dictionary websites and websites using the "what, why" niche.

    Edit:
    haha!

Search now for "show my IP"

Anyone running "what is your IP" niche sites are out of business now too.

ahha Gogole is going kill alot peoples websites with this.

Millions of web site owners work hard to create quality content that will draw in visitors. If the author is correct, it appears that Google would be using the content owned by others to benefit Google, while circumventing the web site owners.

I suspect that they won't do this because the result would be more outrage than they have experienced at any time in their history. Those actions could destroy tens of thousands of web businesses.

That being said, the results for the "show my ip" search are a bit scary.

Seems kind of scary there is so many sites competing for something so simple. Its a pretty dumb and unprofitable niche anyways.

I agree that it is a simple and unprofitable niche, but it is a good example of what Google could do for a large number of searches. Why would anyone go any further when they do a search for "show my ip"?

The article indicates that the focus may be on questions, such as how-to type searches. That could devastate that ability for anyone to make money in those niches.

That is true, but do you know a source that can drive anywhere near as much traffic as Google, especially when it comes to searches? This could drive more site owners to social networks, but even social networks have a very limited ability to drive traffic for many market niches.

That's exactly what Google wants you to do, but only with AdWords.

Unfortunately, advertising, and especially AdWords, is not cost-effective for many online businesses such as affiliate marketing. It is not even cost-effective for an e-commerce site unless you have large enough gross margin dollars to pay for it.
