How can I increase PR?

We had an update about 2-3 days ago.
Last time, I decided to get some "backlinks" for one of my site. I did a directory submission, I exchange a good dozen links with relevants sites. I also put my anchor in a couple of PR8 sites but they change them with a noFollow before it was hit by Google.
Results: PR3 to PR2

I have another site, but I had no time to do the same thing, and to be honest, it's not a major site for me like the first one.
It gets no backlinks on Google
Results: PR2.

So, what's wrong with me?

I believe that Google is just horrible at reporting backlinks.

Are you using the Google search feature or Google Webmaster Tools to view your backlinks?

What does Yahoo tell you about your backlinks?

Maybe it's because of bad neighborhood. Who knows if the directories that you are using is contaminated...

I suggest you to try press release and buying blog reviews from blogs with high PR value.

No. Just using Google search with link:----

What does Yahoo tell you about your backlinks?

6045 backlinks for the first one (PR2) and 72 for the second one (PR2) on Yahoo.
7 for the first one and 0 for the second one on Google

Google Webmaster Tools is definitely a better solution.

The link: operator only shows a small "sample" of links that Google knows about.

You can get high quality backlinks from press release distribution sites like PRWeb.com if you have something newsworthy to talk about, and of course, it must something related to your industry.

You can buy blog reviews from people who have blogs with high PR value in the links section. That might help you to get higher PR for the next update. It also help you to get better SEPRs because that backlink is considered as a vote for your site..

From what I know... directories aren't that good for PR...
But one tip mate, don't concentrate on Pagerank.. better concentrate on SEO for your SERP....
Make promotion, once that is great, pagerank will become bigger too, but because of your users linking to you, not you

Did you try PRWeb yourself? If yes, what have been the results?

You stated that you exchanged links - did you do a reciprocal link exchange - if yes, that might be your problem.

There has been a major problem this time with google devaluing reciprocal links.

I'd suggest you look at better ways to acquire one-way links - also, remember that the sources from which you acquire links need to spread out - i.e you can't get the majority of your links from just directories or get a majority from just social bookmarking sites.

Out of my personal experience i've seen that niche related blogs with regularly updated content and big PR dumps.

You should look at purchasing site-wides from these blogs and look at side-bar links - you will acquire and retain a page-rank.

Nevertheless, don't worry about PR - its just a number

PR4/5 can be achieved easily by keeping the site clean, and by getting decent quality links from relevant clean sites. Most of the free directories are just not good enough to pass on the link love. Getting limited number of quality links from othe relevant sites is what has worked for me (I wasn't aiming for PR).

Another easy but expensive way is to buy PR7/8 links and you will easily get PR5/6/7. PR of the linking page plays an important role in getting PR and is one of the significant factors - this is true only for PR purpose and may not be true while aiming for SERPs.
