Just listing some methods of how one can promote one's site for free.

1) Forum posts
2) Write new articles and post on your site and to industry sites
3) Respond to other industry news articles with meaningful responses
4) Free directory listing
5) Links from your partnets
6) Blogs
7) Social Networks

What method do you use for free promotion?

Here are some methods I use and will be really helpful for anyone to boost the traffic. Most of us would list the common activities but let me just share my experience:

1- Social Bookmarking

• Stumbleupon
• Digg
• Squidoo
• Del.icio.us
• Propeller etc etc etc
• If you have a good social network, you can also for for Facebook or Orkut.

2-Forums & Community Participation:

Join different communities related to your niche and post there. Use your link in Signature so members could follow you on your website.

3-Directory Submission:

Go for directory submission. Now-a-days people are offering cheap services. Grab one quality offer and you will get backlinks as well as stable traffic from them as well.

4-Press release sites & article sites One of the very old and powerful way to get the targeted traffic, quality links and limelight.

5-Video Sharing Websites Share your videos with web community because videos speak out more than text. Hundred’s of sites are there & if you post your video to at least 30 of them, then huge traffic will be coming your way.

6-Write some tutorial or e-book.

I haven't seen the direct result from social bookmarking other than backlink, I mean I hardly see traffic coming from them but I still do it.

This is where most of my traffic come from, the good thing about forum participation is not only it gives you traffic but also extra placement at SERP.

Article submissions are always highly effective.

Make a very good video about your niche. Then inform blogmasters about it, and tell them that they can use it on their blog if they like.
This worked for me and brought traffic for many days.

I agree with you Desan. The most affective promotion technique is video sharing. Just make a video and upload it to youtube or metacafe whatever and see the traffic coming to your site...well your video should have something for visitors... I mean should be related to the niche visitor is expecting.

Yep. It should tell something worth telling. Maybe even something worth paying. I'm sure that would bring good amount of exposure.

I am also thinking to do this video marketing strategy, with a little blackhat seasoning, I am pretty sure it'll drive significant traffic.

Hhhmm... gonna alocate a budget to do this...
