Thread: I need my help promoting my question and answers website

I started my question and answer website cause i saw a gap in the market for questions not being answered by google.

So i thought id start my own site. { link removed by mod due to malicious attack warning }

I am still waiting for the pages to get indexed as i added a few questions.

My question is... how would i get members to join and actively use the site?

Going to switch to adsense probably.

Facebook would be one good vehicle for driving traffic to a q&a site imo. I'd think a site of that nature might be a bit of a tough one to promote tho... Not exactly a shortage of competition with a head start.

Yeah the traffic/brand/page rank i have to go against is so much.

I should of really just picked a niche and just done questions of that or a user generated section like blurtit does. "trends"

I would always start with something as niche as possible and then go from there.

If you create something that is new or almost new, you will compete with quality.

If you do what has been done too much and don't stand out in any way, you will need a substantial budget to beat the competition.

A site has to have some type of focus today. General topic sites rarely rank well, unless you have an incredible amount of content mass, such as in the case of eHow. Even eHow was wacked by Google when Google first started their Panda updates, but eHow improved the quality of their content and regained lost rankings.

What eHow did is not likely going to work when you have a general topic site that allows users to answer questions. Most user responses are mindless and unfocused. In my opinion, you need a niche-focused site with a writing team that researches and answers questions intelligently.

On the niche issue, I can see traffic going to a site that reliably answers questions about Auto repair or vaccuum cleaner repair or small appliances or something, but if your questions range from What kinda load should I use in 45LC blanks for cowboy action? to Why is Brittney Spears so slutty?... gonna be tough to develop a following.

If I was gonna do a Q&A site, I'd find a narrow interest product i knew COLD and focus on building that, but until/unless you develop a base of experts that enjoy sharing info for free it'd be =time intensive as hell. Popping a site up and hoping people answer each other's questions from the outset would be optimistic.

Completely agreed on both. It has to be something you are able to do better than the competition. Quality will eventually rise.
