It depends on the keyword you're targeting and how SEO-optimized your site is. If heavily fought in, you'll probably need a thousand links. If not, a simple optimization and a natural link-building will do.

Get as much as you can. But do it with a time interval. Other wise you will get a hedge traffic at one time. Mind that you have to get link from relevant sites and they should have good Pr then yours also good quality.
