    new site, one year plan

    Hi

I've recently started work on a new site. The goal is to have it profitable in 12-18 months (selling affiliate products related to travel through SEO traffic). I'll be adding only1-2 pages a day (written myself, decent quality). But I think a lot of the promotion techniques I've used for earlier sites are less effective now.

I'm only interested in getting targeted SEO traffic, not thousands of uninterested visitors.

At the moment I submit an article (eg to ezinearticles) for each page I write, and sometimes link from other sites I have myself.
But which others of the following would you focus on most for link-building?
    - free directory submissions
    - paid directory submissions
    - in content link exchanges
    - social networking sites (they seem to bring traffic but I never made any money from digg, stumbles etc even when I had lots of visitors from them)
    - blog comments
    - forum signatures
    - should I do lots more article submissions?

I'm not interested in techniques that might get the site penalised - slow and steady progress is the target.

Big question, huh! All advice gratefully received

    Cheers!!

Yes! This, really, is the only technique that has worked for me. Others'll hammer in other techniques into you, but you really need to find what works for you.

Those are both very good strategies.

I tend to pursue link building methods in parallel. I wouldn't focus on one or two methods, I would utilize most of them.

I do those, because they are cheap and easy to outsource.

If the site is important, I would try those also.

Definitely. This is time-consuming, but it can get you the highest quality links.

I would probably stick to related forums.

This is a question I've been asking myself and I haven't built a good test to find the answer. I know that one article submission per target keyword/URL is good. I don't know how much more effective additional article submissions are.

Thanks to both of you. Will, great detailed answer thanks - looks like I keep doing a bit of everything then, with a focus on articles.

I've always been nervous about bulk free directory submissions - I've got a site that's been penalised for years which I think was because when it was a new site I had someone very cheap do about 200 free directory submissions for me (all same anchor text etc - oops!). I'll carry on doing small scale submissions myself, or wait until the site is not so new, before trying this.

I'd be interested to hear anyone elses comments on whether bulk 'lower quality' article submissions are better than one or two quality articles.

    Cheers

I wouldn't submit quality articles to article submission sites. I would get them published on specific web sites.

That process works in the reverse order. You identify a site you want a link from, ask them if they publish guest posts, and then write a quality article. Those articles are usually unique.

Are you very sure about this Will? How many links did you made by this method? You see em in the Webmaster account at Google?

I'm assuming you commented on blogs with do-follow, unique content etc etc
(as you already know alot in this)

I paid a very nice Malaysian fellow $5/hr to comment on dofollow blogs for about 300 hours.

I also paid a fellow named Hasan $230 to post1,000 comments to 500 dofollow blogs.

My SERPS did not improve after either project.

    Your mileage may vary.

So you didn't picked the blogs yourself on quality basis? This could be a factor as I get okay okay result considering the fact that it's a free method. But so far, I've been very picky when posting comments for building backlinks.

I went for quantity over quality on this, because quantity is a lot easier to umm.. quantify.
