    Penguin 2.0 Update May 22, 2013

Matt Cutts announced today on twitter Penguin 2.0 is rolling out.

2.3% of English-US queries are affected to the degree that a regular user might notice.

This is the fourth Penguin-related launch Google has done, but because this is an updated algorithm (not just a data refresh), we’ve been referring to this change as Penguin 2.0 internally.
What should we expect in the next few months in terms of SEO for Google?

I wonder how much havoc the collateral damage from this update will produce.

I don't think that 2.3% will affect those of us that know what the rules are. How can this take down all fo the link farms and other black-hat wearers? Are they really less than 2% of the 'net?

It is not the link farms and crappy directories that will be hit. Those were penalized by Google long ago. The sites listed in the link farms and poor quality directories are the ones that will get hit. This will be much larger that 2.3% of web sites. The collateral damage with major Google updates is almost always much worse than they predict.

From what I see brands are ranking higher. Seems that the focus is on keyword usage and sites with a high percentage of keyword links are ranking lower. I'm also under the opinion that even internal links that are heavy in keywords may be affected.

I've had some minor improvements after Penguin 2.0 and mainly I've been replace onsite links with home, click here or a non-clickable url.

From what I've seen, those with crappy backlinks not previously hit have been hit hard. Those with natural, editorial links from relevant sites have not been hit at all, regardless of whether they are a brand or not.

Yeah, that is pretty much what I have seen as well. My sites were unaffected. Clients who followed my advice and avoided link builders were also unaffected, but literally every client who disregarded my advice and used link builders was hit hard by Penguin either in an earlier update or this one.

I have a new client who recently dropped out of Google. After looking at his link profile consisting of 5,000 mostly very crappy links from unrelated sites, I informed him that his link building service very likely caused the problem. He then told me that he was his link building service and he has been adding links literally everywhere he could for the past few years. He was shocked to hear that "every link is no longer a good link" and this has not been a valid link building technique for several years.

Another quality issue is too many backlinks from the same ip.

The Google Search Patent for determining quality of linked documents recognizes affiliation of websites based on the structure of the documents, traffic patterns to the documents, similarity of hostnames of the documents, or similarity of IP addresses of the documents. In other words, blasts to the same list, blog network or even links from related sites but on the same IP could cause a penalty,
