Thread: Ranking above Wikipedia

I'm sure we all have this problem when our site ranks 2nd just after Wikipedia. Do you guys know of any way how to check the gap between the actual Wiki entry and your site to be able to know roughly how much more work is needed in backlinking?

I've done it quite a few times in the past and didn't have much of a problem, just keep adding backlinks (quality ones) and it'll happen normally.

I've done it too, but I don't want to waste time if it is A. not possible B. requires too many backlinks. Do you know any way to check that?

A - It's obviously possible
B - You don't need many backlinks

I do not, like so many webmasters, obsess over trying to beat someone or some site.
I just do my thing and let google do their thing.

I too like the idea of not trying to beat the competition, however when I only concentrate on quality content, looks, features etc, I don't see much improvement in rankings, or at least very slowly. When I start to care about backlinks the result speaks for itself. In case of a keyword that has Google exact search of 70k the difference between ranking third or first is the difference of having 1000 uniques a day or 150. Try not to care about that and you lost 25k uniques in a month.
Besides, then you wouldn't have signature links if you "let google do their thing"

Isn't it every webmaster's dream to be on top for some keywords in Google? Or maybe it's just mine

I never had one of my websites that far, but like Shenron says if you keep building quality links and give more than Wikipedia offers it might help. Google also likes new stuff too, so you might search for your keyword on forums & blogs with Google and filtering on 'past 24 hours' or 'past week' and sign up to the board or blog, do some postings and make a post with your link in it. That way the people that are interested (it's recent, so people should still be interested in it) will go to your page, and Google will view your site on many new pages rather than that one from WikiPedia and might rank it higher
