Thread: Is SEO an art or a science?

I think will I see if from a third perception. I feel SEO/SEM is more of Management than an art of science. Everyone has different strategy but follows same guidelines. It is not like science where you need to follow a perfect procedure to get the Chemical 'X'.

Yes it is science but only at google laboratory - where they create and modify the searching algorithms.

SEO follows management rules. You bind yourself to a 'schedule' to promote your site. You 'PLAN' your complete action 'strategy'. And time to time take review of it. You 'market' you site. You 'promote' it. See everything is related to management.

So, my vote goes to the third war front - Management!

Well, if it has elements of both science and art, then SEO == craft

seo is just like a fart!

Of all of the SEO guys I know, I would consider them all artists. Some paint masterpieces and some paint cartoons, but they are all artists.

I agree that it's also a guessing game, doing it myself I've ran into quite a bit of interesting finds and successes, and other areas where I can most definitely improve. I think also, most SEO guys are self-taught. This is more of an artists or philosopher's trait rather than one of science.

According to me it's both! It's art because everyone has his own unique way and strategy and science because, you know, it has set rules and outcomes

I think it's both. Science because it can be explained with logic and common sense. An art because not everybody can master the technique

SEO is a set of technique,is not a science or art, science and art are big words.

Either of the two will do for in this profession you are testing your skills
