Thread: Smallest Thing You Did to Increase Rankings?

But now that I see you have evidence about it, do you mind sharing?
    I'd second Shenron on that.
I remember Matt Cutts mentioning in one of the GoogleWebmasterHelp videos that the I.P. address isn't much of a concern as shared hosts many a times have thousands of websites hosted on the same server & owned by various different people.

A few extra things that can help...

Get a faster server (this costs more money probably)
Tweak your sites to perform faster, sometimes you're using a bunch of useless plugins and functions that do nothing but slow your site. G is paying attention to this lately.

I link my sites together in a haphazard manner so that they get quickly indexed, and they tend to be on the same IP's on shared hosting. As long as the sites are OK, why would they get a penalty? Sometimes it needs an out-of-the box approach to appreciate any relevance of my links though

  4. Here's another small thing:
I looked at the images on my pages and made sure they had alt tags that included my keywords for that page.

Generally, they shouldn't get a penalty. I would make sure that you use the links wisely, though, like put the links in the middle of the content or towards the top of the page, if possible.

Gave freebies to relevant sites to get backlinks. Only works in some specific niches of course, and you or your worker needs to spend a lot of time creating quality freebies, but it's the best way to gain contextual backlinks. Freebie can be an image, article, video or any other quality material. It's the modern age bartering.

  7. Thanks for all the tips, so far this is what we have:
    - add outgoing links to authority sites
    - renew domain for 5+ years
    - link your sites together
    - Get a faster server
    - Tweak your sites to perform faster
    - add alt tags to images
    - give freebies to relevant sites to get backlinks

Can you think of anything else that's small that someone can do to increase rankings?

I have read in many places that this is beneficial, so I don't doubt it at all, and I have even taken it upon myself to begin doing the same, but I am curious as to how you personally measured a benefit and tied it to this specific action. Also, how long did it take for you to recognize the benefit from this?

I remember having a few sites that were not ranking at all and started to rank after some 5+ Year Renewals.
These days I typically do those renewals from Project Day 1 (at least for more important projects)
