The Yahoo directory is an example. The cost is $299 for the annual review.

Annual review directories are paid directories charging you every year, since google hit them hard and this business has gone wild with prohibitif rates compared to what they provide anyway, I don't submit anymore to them.

I find those a waste. I rather spend that $299 on something else, ie: article marketing, obtaining niche links.

When Yahoo was powered by Google, it was worth it.

But nowadays you don't get much bang for the buck. You are right that the money could be better spent elsewhere.

The following 3 techniques are a huge wate of time/money imo:

    Blog commenting
    Directory submissions

Not to even mention these techniques are sooo 1999

    WordPress first appeared in 2003

The free directory submissions still have some value.

    Where do you live? Here we count like this: 1, 2, 3, 4... not: 1, 3, ..

My point is, where is the third technique?

I have had many SEO companies submitting to my directories almost every day...how do they have the money to do so if they think that this is a waste of time?

    Hi,

I think people understand the SERPs. And all. I am posting the question if there was no Google Yahoo or Bing to build on. So SERP's would mean nothing for there would be NO search engines to get traffic from.

The webmaster should look at this angle. At anytime a site could lose it rankings ir get slappped. So the referral traffic from links is what will keep them in business.

A big problem though is that it's extremely difficult to get enough traffic without ppc or organic traffic.
