    Travel and local niche

I own several sites I'm building up into a decent portal for my local town, and then the goal will be to expand outwards to other towns, so my needs are different from many webmasters in that I need to promote my site online and offline. Are there any other local site owners or travel site owners here who'd like to talk about promoting a travel/local portal?

Let me start the ball rolling; I have a couple of people working with me, and in the future I'm going to bring investors into the business. At present income comes from advertising (AdSense and local business), teaching English, and consulting fees. In the future I plan to add affiliate programs if they are specific to my site readers.

However, I'm struggling to promote the site offline. Sure, everyone who is important in town knows me, but they aren't my target market. Spending money on local advertising isn't an option, it's too expensive, so I'm relying on word of mouth and emails, but very soon I'll be printing t-shirts for staff and fans to wear, and flyers for car windscreens.

What are you doing to promote your travel/local portal?

Local websites indeed have some additional site promoting challenges. For my local taxi website, I am also looking into inexpensive ways to promote the site.

My collegue at my daytime job -who has been a taxi driver before for a while- suggested to have a small deal with some local restaurants so that they can have a free advertisement on my website while the restaurants can call my number or give a business card when one of their clients wishes to order a taxi. Same deal can be done with other local businesess where foreigners go like conference centers, event halls etcetera.

In your case, instead of a phone number, business cards with your URL can be provided. Or, what about to have a dedicated taxi page and have some taxi companies have your cards or urls displayed in their car in exchange for a free ad on your site?

SEM is probably the best way to go. Try to get links as a resource on Spanish Department Pages from Colleges or on Expat type sites.

A have a local blog and the competition is tough. The blog was part of a 25+ network and each site had a local blogger. In no time the network collapsed. It was very hard to keep the interest going from the bloggers where the sites could be monetized.

i guess you are comfortable with online promotion

for offline promotion you can make tees with printed url of your site and distribute it in local functions like flea market, concerts etc., sponsoring local social activities might also help

For offline promotion, postcards should work well. But you will need a good mailing list.

I have a huge network of sites doing basically the same...

The network relies on search engine traffic, only one of the sites are being promoted offline and that is also the only site where Isell local advertising...

I am in the process of having tourist guidebooks written about a lot of these locations...

Once they are done I might take off Adsense and only try to push my books, you gotta love a product you can sell over and over and over again

Your travel sites have a lot of good content.

I think it comes down to getting an ROI on the content. In my case of the city blogs, the ROI just wasn't there. The only good revenue stream was from text links.

A city portal seems a good idea. But I'm selling wondering if the revenue will support it.

You will need a lot of content so that the site gets a lot of long tail traffic.

The second thing that you will need is a lot of traffic. Without the traffic you will be better off selling ad space. Even with a few thousand unique vistors a month, you may not break $10 with adsense.
