With Tech-FAQ, I did a very smart thing (accidentally). I started off in a smaller niche (security) and only expanded out of that niche after I had gained some links and authority.
It's really difficult for a general site to start up. People don't seem to want to link to general sites. People want to link to "the" authoritative resource on any topic -- no matter how small.
Most of the "hot trends" keywords are in the "celebrity gossip" niche, so you could cover a lot of these with a gossip blog.
