Webroot® Threat Advisory: Hackers Using Real Headlines to Attract Users to Fake Blogs

Webroot Threat Advisory: Hackers Using Real Headlines to Attract Users to Fake Blogs
“For the first time, hackers are capitalizing on the top news stories from Google Trends Labs, which lists the day’s most frequently searched topics, which can include news of the Wall St. bail out or the presidential campaign,” said Paul Piccard, director of Threat Research, Webroot. “These highly relevant news stories and videos are being posted to the hackers’ fake blogs to increase the site’s Google search rankings.”

These fraudulent blogs contain several video links about the news story for which the users were originally searching. Once a user clicks on one of the video links, they are prompted to download a video codec that downloads a rogue antispyware program designed to goad the user into purchasing an illegitimate program that may put their personal information and data at even greater risk.

“Placing malware in video links on fake blogs is not a novel approach,” explained Paul Lipman, Webroot’s senior vice president and general manager of Consumer Business. “However, the fact that these hackers are now manipulating Google’s methods for relevance to increase the ranking of these sites is new and greatly increases the number of people exposed to this threat.”
If these jerks can get traffic from Google Trends -- why can't you and I?

Hmm... maybe those hackers are Google theirselves, as Google wants to have as much information as possible too xD

Well yeah.. if they can, we can it too, though, they are much further in thinking about things than we are...

We think about how to protect it, they think how to get into it...

I'm just thinking that I should check Google Hot Trends for potential blog topics.

I could do a blog post on Tech-FAQ about #46 (BarackBerry).

I could do a post on my politics site about #100 (obama fisting). That post might be rated R...

Using Google trends to generate traffic was one of the ideas I saw in a eBook and video they used Google trends to create squidoo lenses which would somehow have relevant links to there own sites. Never did try it but seemed like a fairly easy way to get traffic to both your lenses and you own site.

Since writing is seriously weak area for me I never did pursue it. Be interested if anyone has used it and what type of results it yielded for them

The one time I did something like this was at the height of the frenzy over the (apparently faked) leak of the final Harry Potter manuscript.

I got a heavy amount of traffic for a couple of days and several fairly weak links.

Mostly, I specialize in really boring topics where there is far less competition.

This might be a bit offtopic, but I prefer asking it here as you were talking a bit about it already...
Doesn't google prefer sites like 'politics, and a lot about politics' rather than 'tech-faq, and thousand other things'

Or not? I mean, tech-faq is about tech I know, but it's just a general site, is it still good to start a site like this or not?

God only knows, maybe they have an inside line to the AI that runs Google?

Yep. Going too off-topic too often can get your domain penalized.

With Tech-FAQ, I did a very smart thing (accidentally). I started off in a smaller niche (security) and only expanded out of that niche after I had gained some links and authority.

It's really difficult for a general site to start up. People don't seem to want to link to general sites. People want to link to "the" authoritative resource on any topic -- no matter how small.

Most of the "hot trends" keywords are in the "celebrity gossip" niche, so you could cover a lot of these with a gossip blog.
