Not if he means the Title matches the content of that page.

Ah, so he's talking about the title within the link matching the main keywords of the site being linked to? Is the title really that important? I always thought the anchor and surrounding text was the critical part of the link.

Anchor text is the correct term.

Yes, but a link is usually structured anchor text

One of my sites only has forum backlinks and a few blog backlinks, and in Google Webmaster Tools all of the links are displayed, but I've noticed that DP sig links seem to have almost no value at all. A single new link from a relevant blog is able to boost my SERP several notches, whereas even 500 backlinks from forums counts for virtually nothing.

Here's a tip though, don't go for sig links, instead start new threads asking for a review or something like that, they seem to do more good, maybe as much as an incontent link.
Does anyone think google has devalued sig links or at least sig links for particular sites? Fingerprinting the popular forum apps to discern sig links wouldn't be hard, but would google want to? I think they probably would. Anyone know of any experiments?

I ran an experiment a bunch of years ago; you could run a similar test now.

• Register a fresh domain and don't link to it outside of this test.
• Put up a hidden page on that domain which contains a unique string.
• Create posts in a number of web forums which link to that hidden page.

You might even run two tests, one for message body links and one for signature links.

I've already noticed, although not tested it, that links in the first post of a thread seem to appear in search results and consequently get some search engine traffic.

Signature links appear in Google alerts but I've yet to notice anything from search traffic for sig links.

On some forums, especially small niche forums, and where the thread is filled with great posts (not 'me too' type posts) I'm noticing that links will appear in search results, but usually sites like DP don't for my sites. Suggests to me that not all forums are created equal, although Google have probably discounted most of DP for lack of quality and relevance.

My experiences aren't tested, and I really don't know how to test them but maybe someone else would like to see if they can come to the same conclusion.

Waiting for suggestions on my follow up Q now.
Say you are targeting a deep link in your site. The page is just a day (or a week) old. What is your "link building" strategy for such a page?
If you are going to buy some incontent links from related blogs how many links would you buy at a time (per day or per week or per month!)

My "feel" for this is that, unless you are using automated link building methods, it's really difficult to add links too quickly.

Google can take a month or more to crawl low-PR pages and see your links. I wouldn't worry about adding too many of them at any one time.

Every low PR site I have worked on Google crawled almost daily. New links are followed as well and have seen new sites show the next day in serps. I do think that Google devalues or gives little value to signatures in forums. But I assume it is because of the duplicity of those links within the site, but if there is one link pointing from a post it is given normal value per the value of the site it is on.
