For newbies SEO or Search Engine Optimization can be hard to understand. I too, although not a newbie, am still confused on what does SEO do with one's website/blog.

Can anyone here explain it broadly?

It's always good that before we ask any question, we must search first, like I do. Right now, I'm developing my SEO knwoledge for my own blog.

while it is advisable for everyone to search using their fav search engine, it can sometimes happen that a particular user may not have understood the concept entirely. I feel that is where forums like this one help out.

YOU=the user who uses google, yahoo, etc and enters the keyword.
OCEAN=populated by lots of randomness websites.
FISH=are the actual websites itself you looking for.

without SEO= your website would be drowned,

SEO determines the success that the "USER" would find your website through utilization of keywords, contents, design etc

take informations that are basic when you are on an early stage of learning. then advance as you absorb them.

SEO is optimising your site for high search engine placement for keywords that you are targeting.

Changes that you perform on your site are known as On Page SEO.
Building links and targeted traffic is known as off page SEO
