I have to agree w/ bogart. Blogroll links are going to pass you a LOT more PR to your site (not that PR is "that" important"). And a blogroll link will get you many more inbounds with your targeted link text.

But honestly, you should be doing both. You want domains linking to you with single links (like a blog post link)... and you want other domains linking to you with site-wides (like blogrolls or footer links). And you should be getting links from non-blog sites as well. It looks more natural and should help prevent your blogroll links from being discounted since it would be harder to detect using automated means.

Google just got a patent approved in August of this year that they applied for in 2004 (and have likely been using since then) that allows them to detect affiliated links. By analyzing your backlink profiles, the can detect site wides, reciprocals, 3 ways, link wheels, link farms, and other forms of linking schemes. It is thought that this might be used to detect and devalue certain types of links.

If your site has 50,000 links from 100 different domains and every one of those links is a site-wide (blogroll or footer type) link then that is likely going to raise a lot of eyebrows. This would be very easy to detect via an automated filter.

If your site has 50,000 links from 5000 domains and 4900 of those domains provide single one-way links and 100 domains provide the remaining 45,100 links via site-wides then this looks MUCH more natural and would be much less likely to raise eyebrows. I mean, it seems very reasonable that a site that is linked to using single one way links by 4900 different domains might also have 100 domains that link to them with site-wides.

The Phrase Based Indexing Patent makes it important to pass juice in the phase. You may no longer rank on the long tail without enough inbounds with the anchor text,

Thanks for the info. I started using the rel='me' attribute a little while back with this in the back of my mind. Wondering if Google will start supporting the rel="me" attribute"?

I agree that the webmaster needs to mix it up. The blogroll link makes a good compliment to books marking and articles. So you get a mix of quality and quantity.

The blogs have 2/3+ new posts a day. So the sites are picking up 100/200 new blogroll links a month.
