I find yahoo overture to be a great way to promote a website. Those costs per click can add up so be choicy with the keywords you select. Narrow down to words that accurately describe your site instead of being too broad. Hope this helps.

I find pay per clicks to be a bit risky, you could come across a user how finds it fun to click all over your site but not join, and run up your bill.
