the /u/ can be changed in .htaccess to whatever, then just change in index to reflect the changes.

Ads are only on the site pages. The redirect is instant, no holding page. You could however make up your own hold page for the redirect if you really wanted to.

It isn't coded into the script exactly (there is however the 'most' page which shows which have been hit the most), but it can be easily done. You can see an example of such an implementation by checking out the 'Hit Tracker' page on the url shortener site in my signature. It allows a user to enter in their link slug and pull up it's hit statistics. an example slug you can lookup is mrbill to see it working.

This is just a simple form that queries the database with the slug entered and returns the results.

Would make a nice addition to the script. Hint hint

Along with a switched holding page so it on or off with the ability to set the redirect delay.

after I create a short url and visit the link, I'm getting an error like this: Not Found The requested URL /u/8401 was not found on this server. what am I doing wrong?

Give me a couple days, and maybe I'll release the hit tracker. And I guess I could come up with a holding page too, maybe

Does your server support mod_rewrite?
