I don't think people care about being exposed to their advertising. It is a matter of what they are doing with the information that they collect about you. Their new policy basically says that they can do anything that they want with it and you are giving them permission. That just covers their hind-ends from FaceBook type law suits.
Google doesn't give hardly anything away that is completely free. Almost every one of their "free" offerings is designed to collect information. That has always been their "fee."
If you have been keeping up with the FaceBook issues, they were repeatedly caught being deceptive and were selling personal information without members' knowledge. We have no idea about what Google does with the info they collect. Many people believe that they have a covert relationship with the government, which allows them to escape the lawsuits that others get hit with for privacy violations. I don't know what they do with the information, but that is one of a long list of possibilities.
I plan to opt in because there isn't really any other choice once you have started using GMail and other Google tools extensively.
You can have it fast, good or cheap. Pick any two.
