The other thing the internet is being used for a lot is straight up fear mongering. I have seen plenty of completely false statements go viral in form of videos and blog posts. And once they start being shared on Facebook and Twitter, people seem to start believing them the more they get shared.
Like I keep saying, perhaps 90+% of people (99% for Democrats) never take the time to research anything. Instead, they believe what they see on the web and hear from friends. When the world is in a state of information overload, as we currently are, that is a dangerous concept.
The flip side is that no one trusts their government enough to allow them to filter information. Information will always turn into propaganda when the government control it.
