Google warns UN's telecom treaty conference threatens 'free and open Internet'

Google has warned that upcoming United Nations-organized conference threatens 'free and open Internet'.Government representatives are set to agree on a new information and communications treaty in December.
It has been claimed that some countries will try to wrest oversight of the Internet's technical specifications and domain name system from US bodies to an international organization, the BBC reports.
"The [UN agency] International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is bringing together regulators from around the world to renegotiate a decades-old communications treaty," Google wrote on its Take Action site.
"Some proposals could permit governments to censor legitimate speech - or even allow them to cut off internet access," it said.
"Other proposals would require services like YouTube, Facebook, and Skype to pay new tolls in order to reach people across borders. This could limit access to information - particularly in emerging markets," it added.
According to the report, the UN has, however, said there would be consensus before any change was agreed.
Google has asked web users to add their name to an online petition to support its view.
Google added it was concerned that 'only governments have a voice at the ITU' and not companies or others who had a stake in the net.
It concluded that the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) was 'the wrong place' to make decisions about the Internet's future, the report said.

Why would I sign... Cause i think the UN cares about public opinion, or because my name isnt yet on enough databases of dissidents to round up when the time comes?

It is amazing how far every government bodies want to control internet. I can understand that they go after the cyber criminals, but free speech is more and more threatened.

Free speech is an endangered species. Governments are all for it... As long as they agree with it.

I can understand their concerns. Free speech lets the cat out of the bag regarding the massive amounts of corruption and dirty deals that take place in governments around the world. It is hard to hide from the Internet. The more corrupt, oppressive and fragile a government is, the more they want to curtail free speech.

If you think the Internet has not added to the large amount of unrest in the world, you probably have not been paying attention. The web is the easiest way there is to spread rumors and nonsense, as well as hard facts and truth.

Completely agreed. The other thing the internet is being used for a lot is straight up fear mongering. I have seen plenty of completely false statements go viral in form of videos and blog posts. And once they start being shared on Facebook and Twitter, people seem to start believing them the more they get shared.

The flipside of Mikes argument is that people see a few fakes and they become desensitized to news they simply would rather not believe... Even if it IS verfiably true based on primary sources.

In a word NO. Why would I. The only thing that I can see is that google will spread enough propaganda to tilt the scales in there favor. As Rob stated. "Free speech is an endangered species."

That is how propaganda works. The more it is told and shared the more people believe it to be the truth.

I keep seeing compelling pictures claiming to be atrocities committed by the IDF in Gaza, but then the pictures turn out to be cropped photos of things that took place elsewhere years ago or were staged for effect. Any day we me see pictures of a dead guy that looks suspiciously like a still shot from Star Wars accompanied by a caption accusing Israel of employing lightsabers against civilians.

Then again i told a guy the other day about the US government purchasing military grade hardware for innocuous domestic agencies and he laughed and made a dismissive remark about people watching Fox News. In fact the information came from the official GSA website and tapes released by the US government.

Credibility is a tough thing to verify on the net. "Useful idiots" will repeat lies without knowing they do so, provided those lies conform to their predisposed opinion. Meanwhile truth gets buried in the process, and putting the government in the position of becoming the arbiter of truth is a pretty pollyanaesque thing to do given our government and all others can and will lie on their own behalf.

Truth is found by research of primary documents, not by sitting on Santa Govs lap and asking him to hand it to us.
