It’s Here: Google +1 Buttons For Websites

As expected, Google is now offering +1 buttons that can be placed on any web page via a short code snippet. The code/button is supported in 44 languages, but +1 activity continues to show only on English-language search results on Google.com. (Google says it’s working to expand +1 worldwide.)

    hi,

I will wait and see how much it hurts websites before I put it on. Also how long to you think it will be before yahoo, bing and others copy it as well. They will soon be as worthless as facebook likes

I think this is interesting because it goes in line with that "likes instead of links" paradigm shift thing which I rambled about some time ago. I have mixed feelings about what Google has been doing with search lately, but since I like the social media paradigm a bit better I kinda welcome this. I'm just not sure how much of an impact will it really have.

Can it actually hurt to try it though? How? Also, are facebook likes really that useless?

In the new Adsense beta interface it tells you:
1 - one snippet prior to the </body> tag
2 - ANother snippet where you want the button to show up.

This should be easy to game for savvy BH programmers maybe? i.e. simulating random +1 clicks. Or maybe it is a trap?

It appears that it would be pretty easy to game this with proxies or with a network of friends. I predict that will happen if this actually starts to influence search results.

Doesn't the ability to vote require a valid Google account though? If so then anyone attempting to game this would have to start a bunch of fake Google accounts, and that's something Google might be able to detect and combat. It's similar with Facebook, except on facebook it's a little easier to check out an account by its activity history to see if it's legit or a scam.

In any case I really hate spammers and fakers...

Now that I dug into it deeper, it does look like you need to be signed into a Google account in order to vote. That just means that some people will set up multiple Google accounts to game the system. They are already doing that to game Google Places with Google Reviews.

Because you have to be signed into a Google account, this looks like just another attempt to track your activities on the web. Everything that Google does seems to be tied to gathering information about web users.

It also looks like a thinly veiled attempt to get more people to sign up for a Google account. I went to the Mashable site. The button does show up even when you are not signed into a Google account. When you click the button, you either have to sign into a Google account or create one.

I don't know if this will go anywhere. Time will tell.

Actually they will try to force people to sign up and login into a Google account to vote with the +1 button. It also means that you have to give away for free to Google your own internet surfing data until you are logged, then your data will help Google advertising system aka Adwords or other partnership or owned Google companies to benefit the analysed data.

They offer Google analytics for webmasters which is in fact Urchin web analytics software. Now they want the other side which is the people.
