I think that there's a correlation - but not the way people think.

Think about this:
You start a blog and it is PR0.
You start adding content, building links, etc. Your PR is rising - doesn't matter why.
As time goes by, you're doing more, and your blog's quality is increasing.
Therefore, your position in the SERPs is rising.

The thing is that it just so happens that your PR is also rising, because of the improvements you're making to your blog/site. So - is your PR raising, and then because of the PR your site is ranking differently? Not at all. Your quality is rising, and that increases both your PR and ranking.

People just see a higher PR and a higher ranking, or a lower PR and a lower ranking, and assume a cause and effect relationship betwen them.

There is a correlation, anyone who says otherwise has no bloody idea what they are talking about. You need links for pagerank and you need links for traffic. Catch my drift? However, if you are just chasing PR with no regard to other seo factors, this doesn't mean you will generate a lot of search traffic.

A lot of the web2.0 links from blogging, bookmarks, etc don't have too much longevity. A webmaster that can time a PR update a few weeks ahead of time, should be able to gain some temporary PR. This would trick a lot of people into believing that links from this site were worth more.

This is a correlation as PR is one of the many ranking factors that Google uses. But it isn't the only ranking factor. PR doesn't measure the relevance or authority of a backlink.

Today is the Page Rank update on the G toolbar, just sad to see the manufacturers in my field having only PR3, I guess Google spit on our sites once again.

Of the 1,713 domains I was tracking, 624 changed PageRank -- but the overall PageRank of the set only changed from 2,467 points to 2,604 points. That's low enough to be statistical noise.

My only PR-related difficulty is hitting PR5. PR4 is absolutely no issue for me, and I've been steadily maintaining it for some time.

Just need some sort of an extra push, I guess.

PageRank is a logarithmic scale. Google hasn't published exactly what the base is, but it is probably somewhere around 8. If it is 8, that means it is eight times as hard to get PR5 as it is to get PR4.

Of course, you could be at 4.99 right now.

Doesn't seem to be much of a difference +/- in your sample. I'm been seeing some strange results but that may not be as strange as I originally thought.

Don't forget that Google has neutered the PR for a lot of inner pages in sites, especially if they are directories or duplicate content pages. They may have nullified some of the the links pointed to your sites, which would reduce the net effect of your link building efforts.

Will, how can you possibly keep up with 1,713 domains?!!!

It looks like your stable of sites has doubled over the past two years.

You can't pay someone $5 to edit a site that is only making 10 cent a day it would take forever to get back your money.

Back on topic as far as PR goes do we really care anymore about it?

I don't understand it (not that I ever did) and I don't feel google has a clue either anymore.
