Yahoo! Announces Common Tag: Like The Meta Keywords Tag, But Even Better

Yahoo! recently announced their role in creating and supporting Common Tag, a new semantic tagging format.

Yahoo! says that Common Tag makes “web content more discoverable” and enables the community to “create more useful applications for aggregating, searching, and browsing the web.” Their blog post mentions that they want to accelerate the structuring of the web, which aligns with their SearchMonkey launch last year, which they said was, in part, an attempt to encourage the use of structured data on the web. This brings to mind a few questions....

This is another step which will separate the technical haves and have-nots on the web.

It will also give an edge to the CMS users, because much of this can be built into a decent CMS platform.

In addition, it will give an edge to newer content, as older content will not be tagged.

Gosh, now Proxy.org will release another tag for proxies, Bing Bong will release another tag, ask.com will release a tag and so on...

Can't they live from one tag instead of thousand different ones for different sites? In the end they do all the same thing no?

Or am I completely wrong on this?

This is actually Yahoo's attempt to transition to what will likely be the new standard.
