We have reached the point where any type of link building that Google encouraged over the past 10 years is now penalized. In the case of natural links, I don't believe that Google's algorithms can determine what is a natural link.

Google is now believed to be actively penalizing sites that pick up too many links from a small group of forums, which includes signature links. They have reached the point of interference with the way the Internet is intended to operate.

I'd be interested in hearing elaboration on this one (from the article):
Don't link externally in the footer

A couple of other rules that I see people violate all the time that Google has made painfully clear in the past few months: Don't link externally in the footer. Just don't. I'm not going to go into the reasons. Just don't do that.
I gather he means it's verbotten to have a link in the footer that leads to another site. He isn't going into reasons, but I'd be interested in detail as to the point of that instruction.

The value of footer links has been discounted by Google for at least 5 years, but like so many other issues that Google merely ignored, the links may now be penalized.

There are articles out there from one of the SEO conferences held about 5 or 6 years ago where Cutts was reviewing penalized sites. He pointed out that one site he was reviewing contained links to ring tone sites in the footer. Also, one of the Penguin updates targeted footer links to unrelated sites. A lot of designers who put links to their sites in the footers for clients' sites got hit with that one.

Makes me wonder about wordpress blogs that have no sidebar, have instead a bottom section with all the links, etc.
Google count these as footer links?

Google spiders never actually see a web page. They can only read the HTML script.

The only way a spider can identify footer links is when they are either wrapped with HTML footer tags or are at the end of the script. I suspect Google's algorithms would count these as footer links and would discount them.

Based on what Matt Cutts said over the years about Google algorithms, I speculate that they start at the top of the script and log all of the links, then they eliminate the duplicates and perhaps those using the nofollow attribute. What's left is a stack ranking of links. Any links to sites that are unrelated to the topic of the article would be treated suspiciously.

    Hi,

IMHO I feel it will come a time that all links will be bad unless you buy them from google. That is what they are doing now as it is. They just are not saying it that way.

I build links with the hopes of getting traffic that is not from google. From time to time it works. The other day my one small site had 79 UV 23 came from google the rest came from links I made. Twitter facebook and other SM places along with link exchanges but man is that a lot of work. I am living on SM sites to the point that I have not been adding content just sending people to content I already have online. I need to clone myself about 5 times just not enough hours in a day to do it all.
