I looked at both several years ago before I decided to go with PHP. I am a former classic ASP (.asp) programmer and there is no doubt in my mind that PHP is easier to work with and much more effective when dealing with SEO issues.

Use whatever you are comfortable with.

I see ASP.NET as taking a simple concept and trying to turn it into rocket science.

PHP on Apache is better for working with search engines. Microsoft servers lack some of the basic tools, such as the .htaccess file, that are commonly used to resolve search engine issues.

Put it this way. If you want a job working in a corporate IT environment, then ASP.NET is the better choice. A lot of large companies have a Microsoft IT environment. If you want to develop web sites for clients or for your own use, then PHP is a far better choice... IMHO .

To me ASP.net and Coldfusion needs proprietary software to run (namely windows OS) and I think are not open source. I wouldn't use them. That just leaves PHP, PERL,Ruby and Python. Take your pick. Naturally I choose PHP. Perl and Python are more complicated. I dont think anyone makes sites with Ruby. (not that I ever came across).
