You can use the canonical tag if you are worried about duplicate content.

I don't think that's applicable.

The duplicate content would exist because it is both on the homepage and on the post - hence the purpose of using the excerpt feature. It exists so that you can describe your content with unique terms on the homepage, leaving the content on its own individual page.

All blogs should use excerpts to prevent that.

Showing the recents posts on the homepage are bettter for the user. I believe that Google will resolve the duplicate content matter on it's own.

On the otherhand, you are correct that excerpts are better for SEO purposes.
