If you want to learn more about SEO basic, there are a lot of source that you can use as your references. Using the right SEO method, you can optimize your website or blog useful, especially for your visitor. Often, especially for SEO beginner it doesn’t know, from where they will be start about SEO method. Hope this reference can help you to increase your SEO knowledge. As a beginner, I'd advise you to go with basics of SEO i.e. directory submission, Bookmarks, articles, classifieds etc. Understand and learn the techniques and know what is the link building. Then you should go for Blogging, forums, link exchange and even SMO!!

Step by step learning is important in order to learn SEO properly. Document yourself about one area, try it, then continue with another.

I also learnt a new terminology, SMO. I did not hear about it before

I wouldn't worry too much about directory submissions, bookmarks, articles, classifieds, etc. That's low quality, and an indication that you're just looking for "cheap" and "easy". Focus on creating good content, content that can get shared and liked.

I think for beginner you can just creates quality of backlinks using some off page activities like :-
1.Article Submission

2.Social Bookmarking
3.Forum Posting
4.Blog commenting

Check again, article submission is no longer a valid way of doing SEO!
Neither are the other 3 you mention.

The best SEO nowadays, with google changing the rules daily (and they no longer bother with panda update notices), is to take care of your blog/site.
Doing onsite seo.

Anything done offsite, like article submissions, etc you mention?
May do more harm than good!
Plus that is no longer considered SEO work!
At best, any offsite method is good for traffic only.

1.Article Submission - Killed by Panda and Penguin. Links from poor quality content have not value. 99% of submitted articles are crap and article submission sites have been heavily penalized.

2.Social Bookmarking - Never has worked. Most social network links are nofollow. Google has abandoned social networking as a rank booster because it is too easy to cheat and manipulate results. They do not even use their own Google Plus network.

3.Forum Posting - Minimal results at best, and only if your site is directly related to the forum's primary theme and the topic for the thread.

4.Blog commenting - WordPress automatically adds nofollow attribute. If you can get people to participate and stay on topic with your blog it can be good for your own blog, but doesn't help the sites that blog comments link to.

Anything that has been overused and abused over the years no longer has any SEO value.

The best SEO technique IMO is to create "link magnet" content. So instead of you desperately, and tediously building links or paying for links, lots of fans of your content will link to you.

This kind of content may be: free online tools (affiliate disclaimer generator, page rank, page load speed, IP address, site up etc. checkers), detailed how-to guides (how to avoid getting your WordPress blog hacked, how to revert pregnancy), crazy photos and videos (amateur bungee jumping from Moscow apartment blocks), themes (money-making WP themes, HTML 6 themes), plugins (page 1 forced-ranking plugin etc.), driver downloads (upload all the drivers that you have for your computer hardware from floppy disks, and old CD ROMs, or punched paper tape).

None of which I recommend. I go with what Bill was saying. Create good content, use catchy titles in the blog posts. The catchy title will make people click. The quality of the post will cause people to share it.

do u mind telling me how it harm ? i wanna learn how to harm a website, for me this skill is equivalence to how to gain traffic.
