The Dark Truth about Outbound Links

Some people think that outbound links "leak" PR away from your page; other people think that they don't. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Let's say that you have a site with two pages, index.html and products.html. Each of these pages links to each other.

With no other links, these pages share all of their Page Rank with each other.

If you put a link to www.example.com on your index.html, it will not "leak" Page Rank from index.html -- that is true.

But, it will halve the amount of Page Rank that index.html sends to products.html.

As a result, products.html will have less Page Rank. As a result, products.html will have less Page Rank to give back to Index.html. That will lead to index.html having less Page Rank as a direct result of the outbound link to www.example.com. Both of your pages will lose a small amount of Page Rank.

Interestingly, products.html will lose more than index.html. Can you figure out why that is the case? I've been recommending PageRank Explained with Bright Colours for several years as a good explanation for how the Page Rank algorithm really works.

    Yep, agreed
But pagerank is not well important by itself.. while a relevant link might help with rankings. I did some tests years ago and it turned out that having links to relevant sites on your page helps improve serps a little

I remember a contest a couple years back and one of the highest PR sites (brand new) had a ton of outbound links to all the competitors sites within that contest.

He also ranked around #2 or 3 for most of the contest time period.

That is where a lot of the "authoritive site" comes into play.

Thanks! That PageRank site is alright but it could do with a few flowcharts and diagrams.

I'm sure the people at Google have a good laugh at us trying to figure out how their little black box works.

But is PageRank still that important? Does it determine your position in SERPs?

No, but the link building which is required to determine your PageRank... Helps determine your position in the SERP's.

My observations says that page content is also an important factor in gaining pagerank.
I have seen some of my blogs getting pagerank without any PR link. The content was original and quality.
    Any comments?

Fully agree, nothing takes off my mind that G algorithm weights a lot more things than just backlinks.

That's not what their published papers say.

But, Google is a big black box and they are hand editing so much these days that I don't believe anyone knows what's really going on.
