    EMD Algo change fail

Apparently Google are penalizing Exact Match Domain sites that they think have low-quality content.

But I feel that they have failed since my site that generates American Names is unfairly penalized since it does exactly what it proclaims to do and has some unique relevant content on the topic on the home page. There is not a lot to write on the topic of generating American names, so I don't see the point of building out the site.

Now, the top search result description is: "The random name generator uses data from the US Census to randomly generate male and female names. Use it for screenplays, fake id's, car rentals, pick-up", so aimed at criminals more than say coming up with ideas for a baby name.

The 2nd result is for a Fake Name Generator.

The 3rd result is a scam to look up your Native American Name - like you are a descendant of an Apache Indian or whatever tribe your ancestors didn't come from.

How did your EMD sites fare in this latest update?

Most of my EMDs still rank in the top 3 for the EMD search. Most were previously #1. I have not seen very much impact from this update.

I found these interesting articles about the EMD update. It appears that there may have been quite a bit of collateral damage.

I have several Exact Match Domain names that were previously on the bottom of the first page--that are now ranking either in the top 3 or actually #1 due to this change. In fact, there are a few that I own that have 1 page "low quality" type of "web sites" that have gone up in rankings recently.

It looks like this update is another mixed bag of results. The results that most people see with each new Google algorithm never quite match the results that Google thinks they see.

Identifying site with "low-quality content" is pretty hard to do with an algorithm. There were probably several other signals that came into play with this.

I suspect that they picked up on the fact that my site had very few links to it, and being 1 page of content didn't help. My other sites are ok. One of my newish EMD sites that could be argued to have thin content is at #1, and the text content is always going to be thin due to the nature of the main content (video).

Two of my EMDs are nowhere to be found however, their forums now ranks Now I have to edit most of what I did to these domains when it has valuable contents on it. I also feel like their update fail because the top search results today aren't actually related.

Earlier when you have your targeted keywords in domain name, then your domain generally rank for that exact keyword yet your website is not valuable enough.

But now Google has made change, if your domain have keyword but your website is not valuable (using copy content and other black hat SEO techniques) then your domain won't rank higher.

This goes way beyond just copied content. Google has demoted the rank positions for millions of web sites with original content. Other signals are being used to trigger the EMD demotion. I've seen several sites with 100% original content that was pretty good quality drop out of the top 500 positions in Google rankings. It may due to a high percentage of poor quality links or lack of any Trust Rank. Many of these were competitor sites that previously ranked in the top 10.

This is more than just an adjustments. It's more like a warning shot that there are no more free rides.

I had an EMD site that got hit pretty badly in this latest round of updates. I did sell it a while ago so it's the new owner that's suffering now unfortunately, so not really my problem anymore but it's a shame because it was doing rather well. I built it up over several months earlier in the year and it was a dozen or so pages all with unique content and updated regularly, so should've been OK. I haven't seen anybody post actual figures so I hope it helps to see a real site that got hit.

I'm not going to post the url as there's no need but I've attached some pics of the stats so everyone can see the damage that's been done and how it's affected it. The site used to earn me $150 a month from Adsense and the alexa got just below the 100k mark before this. It used to get a good 70%+ organic (SE) traffic and 80% of those visitors used US English according to my GA, so decent enough imho. It used to show up at the top 2nd or 3rd place on the first page of Google search for the chosen keywords and first place for some longer ones, traffic was rising steadily and I was happy with that. I don't have access to the GA stats anymore but the traffic stats are public so can be seen by anyone.

The StatCounter info shows what happened over two months, the big drops happened after Sept 28th and Oct 5th 2012 (give or take) which roughly coincides with with Google's messing 'algo changes'. It hasn't recovered since. The alexa rank has also suffered. See attached.

From my point of view there's no good reason why this site needed to be hammered, it was quite popular and provided good info for those visiting. Great care and attention was used when creating it and I stuck to big G's terms to the letter.

If I can't be a good example, I'll just have to be a terrible warning...
