SEO of Blog Home Page
For SEO of a Blog Home Page I thought the best approach was to have say 10 excerpts of the latest posts on the home page so that only 1 page of the blog contains the full blog post content for each post.
But my buddy says something like it's best to have the latest blog post in full on the home page, followed by the excerpts.
What is your recommendation?
I don't think the choice between your 2 ideas matters much. Since you're probably posting a new article every day, or every 2 days it would almost be the same (except for that daily 1 posts, which will get threated like 'all other posts' anyways the day after..)
On the blog's home page you will only want to show excerpts. Most likely your blog's home page is going to get crawled first, because it will have the highest PageRank. If you put the full blog post on the blog's home page you will end up with duplicate content, and the actual blog post page will be seen as a duplicate.
Always show snippets or excerpts of the blog post and ONLY have the full blog post on the actual blog post page.
EXACTLY! NEVER show a full blog post on your home page. As BHartzer says, it will get indexed under your home page as well as on the post page (and probably on the category and archives pages as well if they also show full posts). Very bad idea to show full posts anywhere but the post page. Not only does it create duplicate content, but the home page version is likely to outrank the post itself and when people click on the link to the home page, if its rolled off the home page, they will have to hunt for the post.
