Tell me more about long-tail keywords..

I learned something new today. Long-tail keywords. Except, I didn't learn that much about them. Could someone tell me what they are, how they are beneficial, and anything else in general?

    Thanks.

Long tail keywords are less competitive and broad. As oppossed to the short tail which is narrow.

Long tail keywords are generally used by less sophisticated web novices or people searching for specific solutions. As a consequence, the long tail tends to have a higher conversion rate.

The key to hitting the long tail is to have more content. It's as easy as that.

It's kind of difficult to target the long tail but you can use the Google Search-based Keyword Tool to look for long tails.

"The Long Tail" is an article by Chris Anderson in an October 2004 Wired magazine article[1] which described the niche strategy of businesses, such as Amazon.com or Netflix, that sell a large number of unique items, each in relatively small quantities. Anderson elaborated the Long Tail concept in his book The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More (ISBN 1-4013-0237-8).

    Example:
    Short: leather shoes
    Long: handcrafted Italian leather shoes

long tail keywords are targeted keywords which mean you are targeting a specific niche. If you aim for less competition, go for long tail keywords.

    ex:
short: weight loss - could be weight loss in the arms, thighs or any part of the body
long tail keyword: how to remove belly fats - very specific area

This book mentioned in the wiki is a must read if you are into long tail projects.

Long tail keywords are good for reducing your costs if you use AdWords.

Long tail keywords are always less competitive with respect to short tail keywords.
