    Burger King Official Twitter Hacked with McDonalds Messsages

    According to this article the Official Burger King Twitter account was hacked for over an hour. About 55 tweets and retweets were made including racial remarks, obscenities and references to drug use.

    Twitter acknowledged on Feb. 1 that hackers have stolen 250,000 user names and passwords.

    So, how safe is it to put the majority of your marketing efforts into social media when you have no control over the security?

    Well, if one uses a damn good password, one is more safe than any company or individual who uses a crappy, easily hacked password.

    Funny though, that this happens all the time to twitter and facebook.
    But not that many times at paypal, etc.

    Seems twitter and facebook have a pretty transparent server operation making it so much easier for hackers.

    The original post suggested that 250,000 user/passwords were stolen. It doesn't matter how great your password is if you have it stolen it wasn't cracked.

    According to a Zeno Group survey 1/3 of corporate managers do not care about their companies online reputation and 10% would take no action to address damaging social media comments.

    I would say their view is probably that bad publicity is better than none.

  6. It is extremely unwise to put all your marketing efforts into any platform that you do not own or control. We have no control over the rules, operations or security of any of the 3rd party platforms; therefore, we should just use them as a social marketing tools and generate leads that we quickly funnel to our web properties in which we do own or control.

    Geesh, so no company should use social media?
    Tell that to about 100,000 companies.

    For the overwhelming percentage of companies, social media is virtually worthless. You have to be able to build a following of interested consumers of your offerings in order to make it work.

    It works if you sell consumer products because it can be used to send coupons and discounts.

    It does not work for most B2B companies because the overwhelming majority of social media members have no interest in the company's products or cannot buy them directly. The key is to be able to bring in lots of targeted traffic that is interested in what you offer. If you cannot do that, it is a waste.

    It does not boost your search engine rankings, which is why Google dropped the pitch that was forcing companies into social media when it was not a good fit for them. If you can drive targeted traffic, social media can be good. If you cannot do that, it will not help you at all.

    The better solution is to use social media to drive traffic to your blog. This way you control the platform. A lot of people forget that a blog is social media and commenting is a great way to interact with people.

    It's tempting for companies to get on the social media bandwagon, for the reason that social media marketing is cheaper than traditional marketing. But, Social media isn't there yet for most B2B companies. Though some companies have gotten good results with LinkedIn and YouTube.
