Facebook Pages Changing to New Format

Facebook will be moving all pages to a new format at the end of the month here.

The new format looks good and there's quite a few interesting functions including a feature that allows you to pin a post at the top of the timeline.

However, there are a number if new restrictions. Cover photos cannot include:
    • Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”.
    • Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section.
    • References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.
    • Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”.
Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must
not infringe on third parties’ intellectual property.

and the reason for the new format is... more ad space! hope G+ builds up to be a stronger competition.

Facebook Pages are mostly used for promotions and if FB keeps this restriction, then use of fan pages would reduced and people might use their own profile for promoting. This will shift traffic to G+ as until now, there is no such restrictions.

G+ doesn't appear to be going anywhere.

FaceBook's power is from sharing photos which has taken a big chunk of the eyeballs that were web-surfing prior to social sites. In fact, With most people walking around with camera phones, Facebook's market share is sure to grow. This is suprising that Facebook has bought Instagram for $1 billion in cash. All Facebook needs to do is make their own browser to compete with Chrome and Windows Internet Explorer.

Facebook today announced it is acquiring Instagram (and its 13 employees) for approximately $1 billion in cash

According to the article there are 250 million photos uploaded daily onto Facebook. That's a lot of content.

I hate the new timeline design Facebook rolled out for all pages. It's not even optional! Posts are scattered all over the page. Not easy to navigate AT ALL!

Facebook has started to show some bad signs. They still have space to grow, but the anti-social fan base is growing as well. I'm not sure this forced timeline thing was a good idea. People say that you get used to all new layouts, but this one is simply not good looking, I've been watching it for months, and I still don't like it, it's using way too much white-space.

I give most social networks another 4 or 5 years and the novelty of the concept will wear off. I don't see Facebook as going anywhere but downhill.
