Fake Social Networking - LOL... even 70% of Obama's "followers" fail a check

Great article by Mashable. Obama Has Millions of Fake Twitter Followers [UPDATED]

The point is a tool was used to test whether followers were "real".

Obama Has Millions of Fake Twitter Followers [UPDATED]

President Obama has nearly 19 million Twitter followers, but 70%, or approximately 13 million of them, are fake or “inactive,” according to a new analysis.
About 30% of Obama’s followers — or 5.7 million — were labeled as fake by the analysis, while nearly 40% were found to be inactive.

Mitt Romney’s Twitter account, meanwhile, has less than 900,000 followers according to the analysis, but only 15% of them, or about 135,000, are considered fakes.
The numbers come from Fake Follower Check, a tool from social media firm StatusPeople that analyzes a sampling of a Twitter account’s followers and checks for telltale signs of fake followers. Fake accounts are those thought to be created for the sole purpose of sending spam, while inactive accounts lack recent updates.

“Fake accounts tend to follow a lot of people but have few followers,” Rob Waller, founder of StatusPeople, told the New York Times in a story about buying and selling Twitter followers. “We then combine that with a few other metrics to confirm the account is fake.”
So... what do you think? Is it really worth building a huge stable of fake followers on Social Networks? Is it worse to have a low number of "real" people or better to seed it with fakes and hope like heck nobody points it out?

This week I've noticed how many people are blindly believing anything without doing any sort of research or giving the matter a single moment's thought. I expect that next we will hear "Romney has 135,000 Fake Followers on Twitter! What a hack!".

Thing is, that tool and the tool I use do not tell the fake accounts.
Either that or I am missing something.
Twitter Audit | How many of your followers are real? tool I used.

Fake accounts are only for those people who just love high numbers!
    Period.

Can you imagine tweeting out something that will make you money?
That is why it is best to audit out any seller of tweets.
Surprising how many are nothing but fake accounts and you know they aint gonna buy whatever it is you are selling.

    Obama fake accounts?
Like all those obama fake voters (which holder is trying his best to keep).

To be fair, most of the voters you're talking about aren't really fake, they're just dead.
[or as the DNC refers to them... "Pulse impaired constituents"]

Personally I don't see gain in sticking a lot of fake profiles out there to "build up my brand"... it just looks narcissistic to me. It's the sorta thing a corporate drone does to impress his boss. ["SEE. Our competitor has 5000 LIKES and we have FOUR TIMES THAT. Oh yeah, I deserve a raise."]

Corporations are full of people that do useless tasks and paper shuffling to hold onto their phoney-baloney positions. Hence the reason corporate goobs are less fun to work with than entrepreneurs.

Allegedly, 32% of Twitter Accounts are fake accounts created by the FBI and CIA to spy on people and monitor social networking activity.

    The above?
I would tend to believe that one.

The percentage sounds high, but the practice is pretty much a given. You just wouldnt need that many accounts to do it.

I was wondering why all of my followers seem to be located in Washington DC and Langley and McLean Virginia.

Guy on another forum assured us he sells only REAL facebook likes.

I'm guessing he considers prostitutes "real" girlfriends, and lapdances "real" displays of affection.

Dude... When you have to pay for a "like"... It isn't "real". [REALLY]

I always think it is hilarious not just the sellers of fb likes and twitter followers, but the legions of idiots who are always wanting to buy such likes and followers.

That is all driven by the delusional belief that FaceBook likes and Twitter followers drive search engine rankings. I had to chuckle when Matt Cutts recently announced that Google does not look at social networking signals. That is the opposite of what a large camp of people believed for the last few years.
