Marketers trying to horn in on the conversations happening on the Web are paying closer attention to what many consider the ultimate prize: Facebook's user profiles.

On June 24, Facebook began testing a feature that lets users share their updates with the public—not just members they've deemed "friends." Each time a user provides an answer to Facebook's profile-page question "What's on your mind?," Facebook's software asks who may be allowed to see it. For instances when "everyone" is chosen, third-party companies are working on software that can analyze the information to see what products or services Facebook members might be interested in. And Facebook is modifying its search engine to look for these real-time feeds as well, the company has said.

This stuff bothers a lot of privacy advocates but I am pretty comfortable with it.

I want advertisers to know what I want, because I want manufacturers to build what I want and I want salespeople to make it available to me.

I want better tools. I want larger notebook screens. I want more powerful wireless devices. I want more bandwidth. I want a one terabyte NAND drive. I want everything I buy to be waterproof, drop proof, crush proof, sun proof, and completely indestructible.

I love free market capitalism because it motivates people to make me things that I want.

Advertisers, are you listening to me?

I never did sign up for face and I never will... They basically make you sign away all of your rights just to use their unworthy service...

I never thought I could/would drool over an office chair

I gave up the Aeron with my big old office desk, when I decided I was going to be retired.

But... I find myself shopping for a desk again, so a replacement Aeron will have to be found also.

Dude, you're my kinda guy.

But seriously, yeah, I don't think scanning stuff solely for advertising is a big deal, unless I guess they're secretly collecting that info for other purposes aside merely targeted ads, but then if they did that and it was against their privacy policy they could get in trouble with people. So they don't have the incentive for that I assume.

Besides, it's really hard nowadays to stay completely private if you work on the web, especially with the social marketing trend. If you wanna stay private, you might as well get off all social networking sites, but then you miss on the social marketing bandwagon for your site.
