They probably are looking for the reciprocal link on the same page, your home page.

Do not waste your time submitting your site to directory submission. Find another effective linkbuild.

this is not true
I would still suggest the site to directories, just not ones that require a link back.
There are some great niche directories out there and shouldn't be passed up.

Backlinks are exactly what their name suggests – a link that directs itself back to your website. Quality of backlinks along with the quantity that help you rank better in Search Engines.
