Ofcourse they can, but they were talking big about Chrome.. and in the end, I don't think that browser is such a good one..
I'm still using FF, I downloaded Chrome, checked it and 3 min. later I removed it again...
So if it's better than all others, than it would be good, but yeah :)

Personally I think Linux is considered by the average person to be too geeky and hard to work with. If Google ever bring out their own OS they would be better off distancing themselves from Linux, maybe do what Apple have done and use Unix as the base but make it so customized that users don't see any resemblance to Linux. If they do that they won't gain linux users, but the average linux user doesn't seem to like being too loyal to different flavors anyway, whereas the majority who are using Windows would probably flock to a Google OS if they don't need to play games and if the apps they use are online waiting for them.
Google all ready has it's own linux distribution. D: Goobuntu
Well, making a decent OS is much harder than a browser, but google probably can do it if they decide to.
Dang! imagine if Google makes a free OS better than Windows with ads everywhere
I don't think google is/should plan to do anything like that. They are Giant at the moment but that doesn't mean they should jump into everything they can't manage. Creating a brand new Operating system to compete Microsoft is no easy task.
No one will use that, atleast not me :D even it's better than Windows
I think a Google operating system would be awesome. As an IT guy I would definitely install it on my PC :p
That's the case with me because I love to try new stuff but even if they make an operating system, good enough (as per saying) and it's like Linux who would install it? Most of the people are not IT guys and most of them don't even know how to fix small problems ;)
Google is developing an operating system (OS) for personal computers, in a direct challenge to market leader Microsoft and its Windows system.
Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at small, low-cost netbooks, but will eventually be used on PCs as well.
Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010.
"Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," the firm said in its official blog.
The operating system, which will run on an open source licence, was a "natural extension" of its Chrome browser, the firm said.
The news comes just months before Microsoft launches the latest version of its operating system, called Windows 7.

Hmmm... When Chrome was launched, I said to use it instead of other browsers. But than I downloaded, installed it and it was the fastest software ever installed & uninstalled. Now I have the browser again, but I hardly use it.
I guess it will be the same with the OS, so i'll stick with Windows for another 16 years :D
