    Replacing my RAM. Please assist.?

I am currently operating my Pentium Dual Core 2.66 GHz PC with a 256MB DDR2 RAM (400MHz)...I wanted to replace it with a 1GB DDR2 RAM..but it has 667MHz..can it be replaced?? or do I need a RAM with 400MHz to replace my existing RAM??

I am really clueless about the "MHz" thing..please forgive my ignorance..I just copied my RAM specifications from my PC manual..

Here are some additional details. I scanned my PC with Crucial System Scanner and got the following details:
    # Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096MB
    # Currently Installed Memory: 256MB
    # Available Memory Slots: 3
    # Total Memory Slots: 4
    # Dual Channel Support: Yes
    # CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
    # CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.66GHz Model 4, Stepping 7
    # CPU Speed: 2659 MHz

Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.
So, shall I go ahead and purchase a DDR PC3200 RAM?? Wont it conflict with my present DDR2 RAM??

    Thanks.

I believe the the memory speed doesn't matter. You just should have all the memory running at the same MHZ. Ram is pretty cheap now. Why not purchase 2 1gb chips.

    "YES".

And if you want to add another ram in the future make sure that they have the same speed just to be safe.

You'll need to know what your motherboard supports. Look up the motherboard manual or website; you might find some recommended models too.

And, as bogart suggested, RAM is cheap. Try getting the maximum RAM your MB can support. Also, RAM speeds of 800Mhz are commonly available, so get that one if it's supported.

See if you can borrow a chip from a friend. The stores wouldn't take back ram should it not work. Any way to call the computer manufacturer?

According to that pdf your board supports the following ram :

    DDR400, DDR333, and DDR266 SDRAM DIMMs

So are you positive you have DDR2 in there now? Because from the looks of things your board does not support that.

From those specs, your best bet on RAM is the DDR PC3200 (DDR400) sticks.

Take the chip you gave out and bring it to the store. So they can recommend what will work.
