Thread: Windows 7 - Linux

Hello guys.

Over the years I've switched between various versions of Windows and Linux and have become advanced in both operating systems. However, I'm currently using only Windows 7 and as the days go by, I find myself increasingly frustrated at the few, but heavily annoying, issues that exist in this operating system. Therefore, for a smoother work day I am thinking of just going over to Linux once again - for good.

I don't see any downside to making the official switch, and I can't think of anything that would no longer be compatible, but could there be something I'm forgetting? I'll just export my Firefox passwords and bookmarks and take my backup files, and I think that's everything I'll need - right?

In other words, are there any downsides to switching to Linux that may have slipped my mind, that will interfere with my ability to conduct my business online?

Think the only thing I ran into between Windows -> Linux (Red Hat)-> OS X was that I had to keep a Windows box around to do some Excel spreadsheet + Macro -> Access work that wouldn't work in the version of Open Office around at the time on the Excel side of things.

opensuse allows to export firefox bookmarks and passwords. or you might just use some open source programs like password management and etc..

Unless you're gaming or doing video editing I don't see any major compatibility issues when switching. OpenOffice isn't perfect like javanx3d mentioned.

Well, apparently my wireless card isn't supported by Linux.

Ended up having to switch back to Windows 7. D'oh!

If you sold your Windows 7 license, I'm sure you could afford to buy a new one.

I still have a bunch of applications that run on windows exclusively, therefore I can't make the switch myself; VMWare might be a good option for you.

Yes it is, Linux is better detecting hardware, well at least ubuntu just keep trying to configure the network settings.

I guess there are no downsides once you get used to linux and install wine and everything to run apps you might miss.

Wine won't be able to run "all" those apps, but it's in fact a good option.

Which apps are giving you trouble?
Many apps I use are not supported by wine but there are many ways to use them for example finding the standalone version of the software and then running it with wine, VMware is also a good option .
