    I used Blender a fair bit back in 2002/2003 when working on X3D specification stuff.

    Its cool IMO because its the best open source 3D modeling software out there...

    It takes a bit to learn it though, I highly recommend buying the book (if its been updated to the current version)...

    The physics engine for the tool is OK, you'll find better with the paid tools (but those run 5K and more...)...

    If you're doing straight up video only it may not be suitable less you're doing video of 3D animations to record out to MPEG2 or 4...

    5K looks like no easy out for me I'll need to keep using the open source one.

    Yeah, I would recommend taking your time with it or you will just get frustrated. Especially if you have not done 3D modeling before.

    Blender can be powerful once you get the hang of it.
