Well i don't do much coding, but design wise i try to keep my designs simple, mostly because i only just started so i want to gradually build up.
I've done 2 designs so far, and both look simple and straight to the point.
I guess it depends on what the website is too.

I usually leave website if the design doesn't look "modern". If that the correct term. I like the PSD over the Paint Look.

I like simple website really, i like to be able to navigate easily, obviously it has to have some attractive features though.
