how much would you ask if you design and create a site?

a friends friend ask me if i could create a site for him, i suggest to give him a wp site and a unique theme that has to be created by a friend too. I'm asking how much would ask to this person?

I will also provide him the registration of the domain, chose the hosting and etc..
he doesn't know anything but to write content he said.

    so how much?

How many hours do you believe that the project will take? I'd price it out in hours.

Getting it Up will cost you say about $70/year(average : shared hosting), $10/yr for the domain and many hours to set it up.
I prefer you not asking your friend to design a theme. Rather you can just pick a free one and put it up, this will save you time and money if your friend is gonna charge you for it.
You will need to do all the work of adding Plugins, modding the site for it to visually match your expectations, ads, etc...
So everything can take you atleast a week to have it complete and ready for him to use.

One benefit you get is, you can make his hosting account as your referral, and you get a nice commission from your host.
Apart from that you can either price it on the basis of hours as suggested by Bogart or maybe a standard price like say around $70(host)+$10(domain)+$50(service) maybe?

One thing I've done with some "friends" is make them pay for the domain name, hosting (sometimes I'll host), etc. Make it for free in exchange for dinner or beverages and putting my adsense or affilate link(s) on the site. Course if they plan on monetizing in that manner, the number or drinks or amount of dinner might be higher

All depending on how technically smart they are since most folks still think putting a site up is computer "wizardry"...
    Cheers,
    James

Best of luck. It will snowball on you for sure ! Be careful about the "Friend" who you make the site for free then wants help every day on it if you don't have time...
I always try to make it via a CMS that I can "teach" them how to update so I get out of the business of mucking with the site if for free...then only help when they break something.

Yeah, WP is friendly but some people never learn. I have a friend who calls me up for every small thing that goes wrong with his PC.
He's been using his e-mail for so long and sends and receives mail quite often.
Last week, i receive a call from him at 1 in the night and he says. "Dude, gmail has gotten a bit confusing in the past week. I forgot how to send a mail, mind guiding m through. I know most of it though". lol

By the way, you can leave him with some WP e-books and ask him to stay away from the theme files and core files while he's doing his 'trial and error' so he doesn't end up screwing up.
    Anyways, good luck

    How much

Depends solely on the job he wants, pages, matter, features, security and all other issues which I might miss numbering right now.
People charge on the work hours or on the output type etc.

I hate having to quote prices for friends, even if you are in need of the money you realize that you need to have some sort of reduction as is probably expected from your friend. It gets quite awkward sometimes .
