Pet Peeves about websites: what to avoid

My Least Favorite Feature: Autoplay Flash and/or Music
As someone that spends a LOT of time surfing sites in the course of working in the directory biz, I can say that if I could only give ONE tip to a client... it is to skip adding an autoplay flash animation that comes on when you enter the site.

There are other things that raise my hackles, but punching in a URL and immediately getting some narcissistic lawyer or somesuch in my face telling me why using their services is the only thing between myself and total destruction is every bit as annoying as that freakin auto-launch MIDI music back in the 90's ever was.

If you want to put a clickable animated feature that the user can CHOOSE to play... wonderful... but forcing an animation on the surfer is the sensory equivalent of rape. For God's sake do not insist they see your @#$! video just because you can. Personally unless I absolutely have to see the site for business reasons I immediately LEAVE the second I'm met with an autoplay.

    THIS INCLUDES AUTOPLAY ADS, TOO.

It's kinda like having an animated gif of a mailbox opening and closing as an email avatar, or a background that twinkles the whole time you're on the site. Being able to doesn't make it a good idea.

This info might come in handy if you're building a site for a client and they insist on some feature you know is gonna bite them in the butt.

I feel the same way about music that automatically plays. A lot of traffic comes from people goofing off at work. The last thing you want to do is scare them away by letting everyone in their office know that they are surfing the web.

That is my number one pet peeve for sure!
Especially used by marketers who think they will make millions if their video plays at full auto and full blasting sound whenever someone comes to their sites.
I have my sound muted down to 0% since I found out once that some sounds upon entering a site sound like the background of some porn movie!

    Now another irritant is facebook!
I was just there and saw something I liked, but to get to the website and find out more?
Had to sign in using facebook!
    Bullcrapola!
So they lost me as a customer.
in fact, a lot of their advertisers one can not go past the screen where one must sign in (or allow the site) with your facebook name/username.

Then the email I got this morning (how or why they emailed me is beyond me, guess just spamming?) from fab dot com (aint gonna live link to a spammer).
Showing me a nice product (well, funny really) and a link to click to go and view it.
Well, the link was direct to their main page and I did not see this product anywhere there.
So, fab dot com lost another possible customer by: not linking direct to the product in their email, and having such a crappy main page!

I also vacate an e-commerce site whenever they require a FaceBook login. Are they so ignorant that they think that everyone has a FaceBook account?

FaceBook is also ignorant in that they require a mobile phone number in order to open a developer account because they need to text a code. Guess what? I don't want to give them my phone number due to their repeated privacy violations and I disabled texting on my AT&T account because they were charging me for spam.

    Hi,
I don't like giving out my email. Quit asking for email to join for unless I know the site I fell it is just a way to

Also don't have darn box that make you click on it to leave the site

Another favorite tactic of marketers...pop up windows wanting you to click stay or click leave.
The worse are the ones that have like 6 of those in a darn row!

Yeah... when I hit those I assume they really only want someone else. Online newspapers and political blogs seem to be bad offenders on that one lately. I'll get the info somewhere else if I cannot in any way get by without their mandatory click. That's just a matter of principle.
