As for me, If there is a option to close it immediately and the music is soothing I don't think I would mind it.
Yeah it would go fine with a restaurant website...Make people want to eat there in relax :)
Kill the music. If you don't I would strongly suggest making a button that super easy to find so visitor can turn it off right away.
Music can compliment a site, but way to often people get seriously annoyed by it. Think about your target audience, and where they would be accessing your site. Is is a lunch crowd, and corporate people are looking at it? If that were the case I would say no music for sure.
I generally have music playing, so I hate music n websites.
That is an excellent reason. As a web usability guy this would kind of relate to the Hostile Takeover Experience. One of the things I check for when I do an analysis is there are links to PDF files. It's ok to do so, but it should be clearly identified. That way, when a visitor clicks on it, they know their computer will begin running additional software, Adobe Reader.
If there was no identifier that the link went to a PDF file, and a visitor clicks it, they expect their browser to handle this. Since it doesn't it's considered a hostile takeover of the computer. It can also be especially hostile if the computer was slow, or the file was large.
The same thing is occurring with the sound file, and those listening to music already are getting rudely interrupted.
Seriously dude, try and avoid the music.
A flash-based audio function would be cool, like on: http://www.greenonions.be
Though there should be an easy 'play' - 'stop' button. So NO Windows Media Player iframe.
Good luck with the site ;)
My advice - Stay away from music. Often when I am searching the web at my day job and I com accross a site with music, I quickly close the page.
As everyone says, stay away from it.
